The hymn eventually became well known for the "Alleluia" sung as a melisma after each line, which was added by an unknown author, probably to fit the commonly used hymn tune of "Easter hymn". It was written by W. W. Phelps, one of the most prolific hymnwriters of early Mormonism. It is hymn number 1 in the current LDS Church hymnal under the shortened title, "The Morning Breaks". Smith's followers believe the vision reinforces his authority as the founder and prophet of the Latter Day Saint movement.
